Illinois

The George M. Pullman Foundation

The George M. Pullman Educational Foundation supports the dreams and aspirations of outstanding graduating high school students with merit-based, need-based scholarships and continuing educational support as they pursue their bachelor’s degree at the college or university of their choice.

I am not going through Chicago, but I was a Pullman scholar from 1974-1978 while at the University of Illinois. I was grateful to have been given some financial assistance from the foundation. I have donated nearly every year since graduation to the foundation’s scholarship fund. The last few years, it has been my privilege to interview some of the candidates for the scholarship award. After speaking with them, I am humbled to think that I was a Pullman scholar. Today’s candidates strike me as holding much more maturity, academic credentials, engagement in their community, and drive than I can remember ever possessing. After speaking with them, I walk away with new hope for the future of our nation and humanity.

Indiana

Since I lived in the Indianapolis area for 35 years, I am most familiar with the organizations in Central Indiana. As in other states, you can find an umbrella organization like the Indiana Mentoring Partnership [www.abetterhour.org] that can help find or start a mentoring organization in your community. Here are few others that deserve your support.

The Starfish Initiative

I did a blog about what makes great teachers [https://thelonerider.bike/tips-from-great-teachers-and-mentors-3/]   and also included The Starfish Story ( or Star Thrower). The point of the story is you might not be able to change the world, but you can still make a big impact in one life.  That’s the theme behind the Starfish Initiative. They pair mentors with students as they start high school and stay with them until they graduate. All the Starfish scholars are students with academic potential , but not economic means. The mentoring program has dramatically improved the rates at which students finish high school, and also their success in completing college. I was a Starfish mentor for four years.
