A Bicycle Journey Across The USA To Promote Youth Mentoring
Welcome!
I’d like to return you to those thrilling days of yesteryear with the masked rider of the plains, but instead you will have the opportunity to follow the tales of a solitary bicyclist. From April to June of 2016, The Lone Rider and his bicycle, Hidalgo journeyed from the Pacific to the Atlantic, fulfilling a childhood dream that was inspired by a late ‘60’s TV show called “Then Came Bronson”.

From September 5 to October 1, 2019 The Lone Rider’s journey went from Canada to Mexico. At about the same time in 2021, he joined his good friend, Ron in Olympia, WA to tag along on a second journey to the Mexican border.
Starting around April 11, 2026, The (Not So) Lone Rider and Ron will get their kicks on Route 66, beginning at the Santa Monica Pier in California and finishing in downtown Chicago, Illinois. For the Lone Rider, this is a tribute to the George M. Pullman Educational Foundation. He was a Pullman Scholar decades ago. He is offering monetary support to them and is asking followers to also chip in directly to the foundation through the DONATE page. All proceeds will go directly to the foundation.

A trip like this takes lots of preparation. We plan on staying in hotels, but also welcome the opportunity to stay in people’s homes via warmshowers.org. We have stories to share and would like to hear a few new ones to add to the collection. There will be plenty of posts that will interest those that like bicycling and lots of references to classic TV, movies, and pop culture from the perspective of a baby boomer. Even if you are a little younger, I hope you will enjoy the people, the places, and the food we hope to encounter.
The route is all planned out. When things don’t go according to plan, that’s when the adventure begins. And it’s all part of the adventure.
Hope you enjoy. Hi-Ho Hidalgo!
The Lone Rider
